Job Description

The primary function of the Merchandise Planning Department is to trade the Company through effective management and planning of stocks across the Claire’s and Icing brands. This will include managing intake, allocations to stores, sales, markdowns and promotional activity.

The Global Merchandise Planner is an integral part of the planning process, responsible for partnering with the buying team to build global merchandise plans that support the brand and financial goals of Claire’s. This will include building financial sales, gross margin and inventory plans for the assigned departments for both pre and in season plans across multi-countries.


  • Build preseason financial sales, gross margins, inventory and assortment plans, markdown proposals and shrinkage based on detailed analysis of historic product data as well as forward trend information.
  • Maximize sales and margin by providing commercially robust pre-season plans.
  • Monitor in-season performance, ensure assortments plans are always up to date and recommend strategies to stay on plan.
  • Take ownership of merchandise plans and Open to Buy. Manage sales, inventory and promotional performance to drive departmental sales more efficiently. Communicate receipt needs with Buyer and address any sales and inventory concerns with management.
  • Build and utilize Arthur Planning System to establish seasonal plans, including departmental plans by International Territories.
  • Prepare plans built up at product level, ensuring a balanced product mix for each customer type and key building blocks.
  • Establish, review and analyze merchandise plans to ensure accurate and logical figures.
  • Review weekly sales performance at a Division/Country/Department/Class/Sku level within the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Prepare and coordinate inventory needs by classification to maintain proper levels of merchandise in stores
  • Partner with Buyer in weekly communication, reviewing sales performance on best-selling lines from prior week and make recommendations on product repeats or discontinues.
  • Communicate and provide detailed performance reviews to upper management relating to sales performance, outlining actions taken or proposed to maximize sales and profit margin.
  • Review all replenishment; ensuring orders are aligned to forecasted sales, OTB, margin and airfreight targets. Ensure costs are negotiated to maximize profit.
  • Manage and build a successful team, including of Merchandise Allocator’s and Associate Planners.
  • Ensure growth and success of Associate Merchandiser by teaching and ensuring quantities for repeat product is aligned with forecasted sales, sales and stock data are being analyzed and allocated correctly, intake is being followed up continuously and implications are being communicated.
  • Oversee the managing of receipts, ensuring that all orders are delivered on time and charges are applied when applicable and the systems are being updated accordingly.
  • Maintain monthly stock flow plans and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Conduct store visits to obtain direct feedback relating to product and stock levels.
  • Communicate regularly with the upper leadership team on strengths, weaknesses, concerns, risks and opportunities.
  • Responsible for the selection of permanent markdowns and contribution to promotional strategies for areas of responsibility. Execute systemic events for permanent markdowns and promotions
  • Prepare a reforecast of sales, Open to Buy, stock and markdown activity.
  • Communicate effectively across all levels and all channels, in particular with the upper leadership team, vendors and International colleagues.
Qualifications + Experience

  • Fashion related bachelor’s degree
  • At least 3 years of Merchandising/Planning experience within a corporate retailer
  • 1-2 years management experience preferred, not required
  • JD, SAP, Arthur or other merchandise planning tools experience
  • Strong analytical/statistical skills with the ability to draw business recommendations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels, including presentation and summary skills
  • Clear knowledge of Claire’s, our target customer and product trends
  • Strong business acumen skills
  • Highly motivated self-starter with a sense of ownership and an ability to thrive in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Team oriented with strong leadership skills
